What is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, bleeding, or injury to the teeth, gums, or other oral tissues requiring immediate attention. It’s important to recognize that when you have a dental emergency, you should seek prompt care to avoid more serious problems.

Common Dental Emergencies

  • Severe Toothache: Persistent pain in your teeth or gums can indicate an underlying issue, such as an infection, decay, or a damaged filling.
  • Broken or Chipped Tooth: If a tooth breaks, chips, or cracks, it can cause pain and lead to further damage if not treated right away.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: A knocked-out tooth is a serious dental emergency. If addressed promptly, there’s a chance the tooth can be saved. It’s critical to keep the tooth moist and get to the dentist as soon as possible.
  • Lost or Loose Fillings: A lost filling or crown can expose your tooth and make it vulnerable to further damage, which may cause severe discomfort.
  • Abscessed Tooth: This is a serious infection at the root of a tooth or between the gum and the tooth. It can cause swelling, fever, and pain and may require immediate treatment to prevent the infection from spreading.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Cuts, tears, or other injuries to the gums, tongue, or cheeks should be treated promptly to control bleeding and avoid infection.

What to Do if You Have a Dental Emergency

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, it’s important to act quickly. Follow these steps to ensure you receive the best care:

Call Us Immediately

Contact our office as early in the day as possible or as soon as the emergency presents itself. Early contact increases the chances of receiving same-day care.

Provide Information

Our Patient Coordinators will ask a few key questions to better assess the nature of the emergency. You will be asked about the severity of the pain, whether there is bleeding or swelling, and how the injury occurred.

Specific Instructions

Based on the type of emergency, we will provide you with specific instructions before your appointment:

  • For a knocked-out tooth, gently rinse the tooth and try to place it back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, keep it in a container of milk and bring it with you.
  • For a broken tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling until you can see the dentist.
  • For an abscessed tooth, rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution to help manage the pain and reduce infection until you’re able to receive care.

What to Expect During Your Emergency Dental Visit

When you arrive for your emergency appointment at Friedler Dental Group, one of our Patient Coordinators will greet you and gather some important information to help us assess your condition. Here’s what you can expect:

  • You’ll be asked to provide basic details such as your name, address, and contact information.
  • We’ll ask about your primary concern—whether it’s pain, injury, or another issue—and the date of your last dental visit.
  • You’ll have the chance to share any questions, concerns, or special requests you might have.
  • We’ll coordinate an appointment time that works for you and ensure you are directed to our HIPAA-safe New Patient forms, where you can provide your insurance details, medical, and dental history.
  • You’ll also be asked to fill out a COVID-19 Wellness Form to ensure the safety of all our patients.
