General Dentistry

The American Dental Association defines dentistry as “the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and treatment (nonsurgical, surgical or related procedures) of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and the adjacent and associated structures and their impact on the human body.” General dentists are highly trained and educated, becoming officially licensed after three years of undergraduate education and four years of dental school. Additional post-graduate training is needed for dental specialties such as orthodontics, periodontics, and oral surgery.

General dentists provide treatment for patients of all ages, though pediatric dentists are more qualified for special cases such as children with special needs. It is recommended that children have their first dental visit shortly after their first tooth erupts, or before their first birthday, whichever comes first.

The work of general dentists deals with overall oral health. They diagnose and treat oral disorders and, if there are specific oral health issues that need special treatment, they can refer patients to a dental specialist. Examples of these services include oral surgery and endodontic treatment. Besides general dentistry services like dental fillings and endodontic treatment. Besides general dentistry services like dental fillings and crowns, some general dentists also provide sleep apnea and TMJ diagnosis and treatment.

Research has shown that oral health is to the health of the rest of your body. It means that problems in the mouth can be indicators of problems somewhere else in the body, which is why regular check-ups with your dentist are so important.
